SPEYER AND FRIENDS

Judge Speyer, tweezers in hand, was addressing a friend in the privacy of his bachelor lodgings. His voice was more musing than informative, more introspective than demanding.

“My dear, did you ever stop to wonder why I wanted to become a federal judge? You didn’t. Well, I can tell you. It was the immense power, the incredible control to be wielded over human destinies. It would make up for the school years, when I had been pushed around by bigger boys, and later of being lost in the lower echelons of city politics, and still later when I became an assistant D.A. and was assigned all the drug cases.”

He paused for a moment of contemplation. His audience listened to all this without apparent comprehension or response. She simply stared back at him with brilliant black eyes.
